Highland Cobbles are smaller than boulders and larger than gravel. They have been geologically changed by erosion through river beds, beaches, drumlins or boulder clay deposits located by rivers or the sea, making them rounded. Plants grow well in cobbles and pebbles, conserving moisture and reducing competition from weeds, which also find it more difficult to germinate beneath cobbles. This is known by Alpine gardeners as a scree garden. It keeps the roots moist and the leaves free of standing water.
